The personal checkbook is struggling. The savings rate is at the lowest level in 70 years and consumer debt continues to rise dramatically. There were 1.4 million personal
bankruptcies in the U.S. in 1998, and 56 percent of all divorces are the result of financial tension
in the home.
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal on December 28, 2001, household debt in the US had risen to $7.5 trillion as of October 31. This was an increase of 8.5% in one year.
