Fr. Bill's Weekly Message for 3/8/98

Dear Parishioners:

God can do more than we ever thought possible. It is, obviously, easier to believe that God does not, will not, will never, etc. do these kinds of special interventions. After all, who of us has ever seen a transfiguration? We can get trapped into thinking that God's action, to be real, has to be spectacular or at least extraordinary. But for the most part, God's action is done quietly and in the ordinary matters of life.

We have to be "transfigured" internally, in our hearts and souls. Our homeland is in heaven, not here. If you and I wish to have peace in this life, then we must live according to the teachings and guidance of the One who knows best. God sent Moses and Elijah to show us that the Law and the prophets both are necessary to lead us to Him.

Faith (the prophets) and Works (morals) go hand in hand. You and I are saved by the healing touch of God's grace in our lives. It is because of the death and resurrection of Jesus that we can attain the fullness of heaven. Jesus is our Lord and Savior who loves us with the greatest of love.

We have all already been saved, because Jesus died and rose for us. We cannot earn or achieve our salvation, or do anything to make sure our salvation is certain. As St. Paul indicated to Timothy, Wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting conscience, certain persons have made a shipwreck of their faith (1Tim. 1:18-19). Jesus is not our personal Lord and Savior because we accept Him. He is Lord and Savior because of His action and love, not ours.

We who are chosen by God as His special people, "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own (1 Peter 2:9), must follow a deeper path of commitment. We cannot be satisfied with just "getting by" for our salvation. We have a higher obligation, a higher degree of duty, a higher responsibility to live the law and the prophets.

If we surrender to His love, to Love, we will undoubtedly find ourselves tested to a great degree. It is at times of testing that we can remember the Transfiguration and see that Jesus is teaching us of the vision of heaven in its fullness. We have every expectation that if we do as the Father commands, live with love, He will be with us throughout it all. In living as God desires us, we will insure that we will have sufficient grace to withstand any and all temptations, love through all trials, and conquer in the end the evil that fights for us every moment. It is no longer a secret, we can and should tell others.

God bless,

Fr. Bill
